A need for teenagers to develop workforce skills is on the rise in the United States. The Upper Perk School District located in Pennsyvlania has been discussing these needs with UENA’s staff. With our current Teens Teaching Teens programs it seemed like an easy fit to create a bike shop and focus on used bicycle sales and service. Thus, Bike and Sol was birthed. Utilizing partnerships with local police departments, transit authorities, and thrift stores Bike and Sol has launched into a wonderful new project.
Overview of Bike and Sol
Mission: Providing an environment for students and individuals to learn and experience cycling, skating, biking and other wheeled activities in a student managed business setting, modeled through Christian principles.
Tagline: People Wheels Relationships
People – We are using paid staff and volunteers to create a cooperative environment for people interested in wheeled human powered sports. We will be holding clinics and other opportunities for people to experience and learn the variety of nuances around wheeled equipment.
Wheels – We will specialize in Bikes – BMX, Road, and Mountain Bikes / Skateboards and scooters (phase 2)
Relationships – Not only will we work to build relationships with our volunteers but also our customers and the greater community. This is through individual and organizational partnerships.
How do we do this?
- Recycling – Taking unwanted bikes and re-purposing for resale.
- Repair Center – Repairing and re-purposing bikes from the Recycling stage
- Repairing bikes in the community
- Sales – Selling re-purposed bikes store, online, partnerships for resale
- Donate – Sending bicycles overseas when inventory allows
